Cali, here we come!

Yesterday Jeremy found out that he might be going to San Diego to work next week. I was a little bummed until he told me that Holden and I could tag along. We have always done some type of summer vacation because my paycheck was always around and available for fun stuff. This summer the paycheck is gone and our savings was depleted for the adoption. Both sacrifices more than worth the cause. So much so, that we plan to adopt again and again and AGAIN (and if it were just up to me . . . possibly again). And I will continue to stay home with the babies, even if that means no Caribbean cruises or jaunts to Mexico for a while. I will settle for San Antone or something less extravagant in the future years. But really, we weren’t planning on going anywhere this summer. Not after Holden arrived. We have our hands full with him and there just wasn’t that yearning in me for a getaway this year. I mean, sure it would have been nice. But a sunny, beachy vacation (always my preferred destinations) didn’t seem all that practical with a newborn. And honestly, a vacation just wasn’t even considered this year. Until yesterday. So I will soon be packing us for sunny San Diego, California. I’ve only been to California once and that was San Fransisco. So this should be a fun little week. Too bad Jeremy will be working during the day. But the best part of this is that one of my college roomies now lives in San Diego with her family. We have been promising for a while that we would come for a visit and so ready or not, here we come. I haven’t seen Kristy in . . . well I actually happened to see her for a BRIEF couple of hours this past December. But it’s not too often that we get 5 day visits. Our hotel is 12 minutes from their home. Pretty convenient. So Holden and I can play with Kristy and Aubrey while Jeff and Jeremy work. And then our families can hang out in the evenings. It should be a lot of fun. And I am squeal-y excited! If you had heard my voicemail to Kristy yesterday, you would know what I mean by squeal-y. I am ready for some wonderful, comfortable and refreshing girlfriend time!

So traveling/flying with a newborn . . . any advice? Now normally when I ask for your input, I get none. No hard feelings. I know I have readers, because you make comments on how cute little Holden is. But when I ask for your thoughts and ideas, I usually end up having to google up some answers. So come on traveling mommies, send some thoughts my way. Otherwise, I will read the airline info and then just wing it.

Hey girl! I wanted to tell you I like reading your blog. Ok...advice flying w/ a newborn. I've flown twice w/ Tyson as a baby. I made sure to bring his pacifier and of course some bottles, for the take off and landing. I don't know what airline you are flying, but if you fly Southwest, I would take his carseat on the flight w/ me if the flight wasn't full b/c SW doesn't have reserved seating. That sure was helpful, so I didn't have to hold him the entire time. You can always check it once you're on the plane if the flight is full. Hope you get some helpful advice. Have fun!

you need to take a copy of a birth certificate. wear him in a sling, and be prepared for some strong crying upon landing from the pressure in his ears. have a bottle or paci to help relieve it.

I flew with Thomas twice when he was under a year. Both times I planned the flight during a naptime. I had bottles to feed him during take off and landing. I think he slept during the takeoff every time and maybe even during some of the landings. A paci is a must on the plane and I would recommend a blanket b/c the plane is sometimes cool. Pack your diaper bag so it is easy to get to things (I put things in plastic baggies when we flew, but I don't know since carry on rules have changed). I would definately recommend a sling for getting through the airport too. Hope this helps! Have a great trip!

Good thing you are flying southwest because of my 3 trips with Aubrey, Southwest was by the far the best. Take your carseat in case there is an empty seat which will make the flight SOOO much easier. Also, pack little diaper packs for easy diaper changes that will most likely be on your lap. Put a diaper in a ziplock, put a few wipes in a ziplock and put that ziplock inside the ziplock with the diaper. It's so easy to pull out like that and then you have something to put the dirty diaper in! Make sense? I can hardly wait to see you and meet Holden!!!! I'm squeally excited too!

Hey there. We've traveled lots of times now with Eli and he always did great with just making sure he had a bottle in his mouth on the take-off and landing. He usually slept through most of the flight. Just be sure to have something for him to play with or a book to read to him if he decides to get a little fussy. They sometimes get bored if it is a long flight. If you have a non-stop flight - even better! We just got back from San Diego in May for our neice's wedding and Eli did great on the plane - even with layovers. San Diego is great - the zoo is great and Sea World is fun. Holden might be a bit young to really know what's going on but he might enjoy the aquarium. Hope you have a relaxing time and enjoy! Love and miss you!

Take quart sized or bigger zip lock baggies in the event of a diaper blowout...definitely a bottle/paci for takeoffs and landings and a change of clothes -- again -- in case of a blowout.

BTW, I hope to take Fatz boogie boarding on Sunday afternoon!!! He's going to LOVE IT!!!!

I would give you advice if I could, but unfortunately I've only traveled with a newborn puppy...not a baby. With the puppy I gave her the equivalent of valium (but for puppies) and she slept pleasantly for 12 hours. Can't exactly do that with a baby, huh?

Wow, I have no advice yet, but whatever you get - send my way! :)

Also, I've lost your address... Would you email it to me? My mom and her friend are hosting a shower for me in August in OKC, and though I certainly don't expect a gift, I'd love to see you and Holden if you're free! (sharahartman@hotmail.com)
